EM and Pre-Trial Justice

EM for pregnant women?

Sheriff Tom Dart of Cook.County is proposing that pregnant people should not be held in jail but should be given an alternative. This is a welcome move but unfortunately one of the suggestions is electronic monitoring. Unless there are humane regulations put on this practice, past experience could deliver scenarios of a mother in labor waiting 45 minutes for an operator to pick up the phone so she can ask for “movement” to go to the hospital. Changing the site of incarceration for pregnant folks to their house and maintaining the usual restrictive practices is a non solution. Pregnant folks need freedom, confinement in their living room. Read about it here. Let’s hope they let these expectant folks out of jail, minus an ankle shackle.
